Therapy Grant FAQs for Recipients
Who is eligible for grants?
Our first round of grants will be available to individuals of Asian descent, ages 18+, currently residing in Ontario and facing financial barriers to therapy. Applications will be reviewed by our team of mental health professionals and experts and will be granted on a needs-basis. We aim to expand the program to the rest of Canada, so please keep checking back for updates.
When can I apply for the grant?
We are working on securing funding to make these grants available to you as soon as possible. Please keep checking back for more information and updates.
How does the grant work?
If you are selected, you will be able to choose from a pre-selected group of culturally-competent therapists and receive 8 sessions with the therapist of your choice. The BMHF will pay the therapist directly, at the rate of $125/session.
What happens if I need more than 8 sessions?
Due to anticipated demand, grants can only be offered to individuals once per calendar year. Once you finish your 8th session, you may speak to your therapist to see if they can offer you a sliding scale rate at their discretion.
I don’t live in Canada. Where can I seek financial help for therapy?
If you’re living in the United States, please check out the Asian Mental Health Collective’s Lotus Therapy Fund.
Therapy Grant FAQs for Providers
How do I qualify as a therapist/provider?
In order to qualify as a therapist/provider for this program, you must be an Asian-identifying licensed mental health professional in Canada* and able to provide culturally-competent clinical services to adults ages 18+. We will require your license number with the professional college in your province, and a copy of your liability insurance.
You must also be willing to provide eight sessions per client at the rate of $125/session**.
*Note: as our therapy grants program will start out in Ontario, we will currently be only accepting therapists with licenses to practice in Ontario.
**Note: If you are an RP with the CRPO, the $125 includes HST.
How do I apply to be a therapist/provider in this program?
If you are interested in being part of this program, please fill out this form.
How long does it take to be approved to be one of the therapists/providers?
Please allow up to four to six weeks for a response.
What is the process to set up client’s consultations and appointments?
Providers approved for the program will be listed in a password-protected online hub for applicants. If an applicant selects you to be their provider, they will reach out directly to set up an initial appointment.
From there, providers and recipients are responsible for scheduling their sessions. Charges for late cancellations and no shows will be deducted from the recipients’ 8 sessions, so please ensure to remind the client of this.
How do I get paid for the sessions that I provided for the client?
Following each session, you may invoice the BMHF directly for your payout.
Is there a limit to the amount of clients I can see through the program?
No.
Where do sessions take place?
Sessions can be virtual or in-person. BMHF does not provide HIPPA-compliant software or a physical therapy space for providers.
How long is each session?
One session through our program = 50 minutes. You may, however, hold longer sessions at your discretion.
